January 2025 Spotlight: Justin T. Nguyen

Hello! My name is Justin.  I'm not really active on any socials, but I'm on BlueSky at justinguyen.bsky.social, having recently left Twitter. My research focuses on machine learning applications in systems biology. In the lab, I'm using machine learning to evaluate a vaccine candidate for the Lassa Virus, and I also work on general bioinformatics with a focus on clinical data.  I think I have always had a feeling that my path was to be a scientist. My mother kept her old science textbooks at home, so I would read those a lot as a kid (probably just the pictures, but the damage was done!). My biggest goal for now is to spend some time as a post-doc after graduating at a prestigious university known for informatics and machine learning in the life sciences. I remember single-cell RNA sequencing being developed years before it became widespread and being glimpsing the bleeding edge of science would be enlightening. Smaller goal: I aim to make my time at UTMB well-spent. Outside of research, I enjoy rock-climbing and often visit Momentum in Houston. I also love exploring different dessert spots in Houston. Someone once told me that every graduate student has some sort of vice to keep their sanity and mine is plain old playing video games—I'm really looking forward to Monster Hunter in February!
