September 2025 Spotlight: Eduardo Aguirre

Hi, I’m Eduardo Aguirre, originally from Venezuela and a proud graduate of the University of Houston, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. My journey into research began during my undergraduate years, when I joined Dr. Shaun Zhang’s lab in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry. There, I explored the potential of mRNA vaccines for herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2) and worked on developing oncolytic virus therapies—viruses engineered to specifically target and destroy cancer cells. It was an exciting and inspiring introduction to the world of biomedical research.

Now in the Ward Lab, I am currently learning skills in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) culture and computational biology. These are two areas I believe will be key to my future as a researcher. With IPSCs, I am investigating gene regulation across the three germ layers of both humans and chimpanzees. My passion for genetics and gene regulation took root back in Venezuela, when I used to read science books and scientific articles.

My outside hobbies include swimming, cycling, and little bit of pickleball. I also like watching sports such as UFC/MMA and soccer.
